The autumn concert this year will see a return to our tried and tested format of inviting singers to come and join us, albeit with a different name! We felt that as we invite guest singers to join us for rehearsals throughout the term, we can hardly describe it as a ‘Come and Sing’ concert, which implies that one simply turns up on the day to rehearse and sing a chosen work. The concert this year will feature the Haydn Nelson Mass, which, according to one biographer was Haydn’s ‘greatest single composition’. It wasn’t actually written for Nelson, but as it was first performed just after news of Nelson’s victory at the Battle of the Nile reached Austria, the mass became inextricably linked to the famous admiral, who was being referred to as ‘the saviour of Europe’. It is also probably fitting that we should be performing it during the month in which Nelson’s greatest battle occurred more than 200 years ago.
East Malling Singers is a friendly mixed choir of approximately 85 members that performs a wide variety of sacred and secular music throughout the season.
We perform a minimum of four concerts per year, one of which is usually a ‘Come & Sing’ event in which we are joined by soloists and orchestra, as well as guest singers. These concerts are held in the Church of St James the Great, Church Walk, East Malling, Kent ME19 6AG. More details at our website.
